You're Welcome Giving

The turkey... so noble, so patriotic. Our national bird. Well, he would have been if Benjamin Franklin had had his way. This is one of the many fun facts we read about during Turkey Day. We also took pictures as turkeys and made decorations on cups using a cutout and feathers of choice. The dietary staff cooked Thanksgiving food for both lunch and dinner. No wonder the next day we celebrated "You're Welcome Giving".

Fast Food Day

If you're in rush, I understand if you can't read this whole post.

For fast food day we talked about changes in fast food over the years, our favorites quick places to eat, did a fast food prices game, and matched the blank logo to store. Finally we painted our favorite designs onto styrofoam. So many fast food places have red in their symbols, we noticed.

I Love to Write Day

Do you love to write? Patients shared if this activity is important to them or has ever been. We did trivia about various writers, played word games, and embraced the day by writing thank you notes for staff. Some patients chose to decorate the cards and have their thoughts transcribed for them instead.

If you are truly interested in writers, check out my other blog:

Princess Grace's Birthday

Would you want to be a royal? Our patients contemplated this on Princess Grace's birthday. We talked about her life, watched a Grace Kelly movie during lunch, and made the day gleam by painting backgrounds for decoupaged crowns. Staff were asked to wear something royal or shiny. Advice from an activity director: never throw away those plastic crowns you accumulate.

Hello Halloween

We can't forget to discuss Halloween. Now that time has passed it shouldn't be too spooky.

The kitchen ordered too many pumpkins so had plenty to decorate by painting the outsides.
Split feelings arose from candy corn. We used the pieces for BINGO and half the patients ate it before they could get 5-in-a-row. The others scarcely wanted to touch it. We did a candy corn guess, talked about the history of the sweet, and painting the iconic triangle on styrofoam.

On the day of the holiday, we learned the moves to the Monster Mash. Don't worry, I practiced at home before hand. We also did a second exercise of a web toss (cotton balls to tape on a cardboard back) to balance our sugar consumption.

Our dietary staff made fresh pumpkin rolls and devised a non-alcoholic bloody mary with carrots, cucumbers, and bacon garnishes.
